MIT - Rejected

Life, School

Dang.

Dear Alan,

The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application, and I am so sorry to tell you that we are unable to offer you admission to MIT.

Please understand that this is in no way a judgment of you as a student or as a person, since our decision has more to do with the applicant pool than anything else. Most of our applicants, who like you are among the best in the world, are not admitted because we simply do not have enough space in our entering class. This year we had over 12,000 applications for less than 1500 offers of admission, from which will come our 1000 freshmen. Since all of our decisions are made at one time and all available spaces have been committed, all decisions are final.

Despite what you might think, the admissions process is not an exact science. Our applicant pool is more self-selected than most, with a very high percentage of top students, virtually all of whom have distinction in demanding academic programs as well as outstanding achievement in their lives outside of the classroom. We evaluate each applicant’s materials carefully and select those we judge to be the best match for our community.

I am very sorry to bring you such disappointing news when you have worked so hard. You are a terrific student, and I do wish you the very best as you continue with your education.

Sincerely,

Marilee Jones
Dean of Admissions

Oh well, I guess I couldn’t cut it to join the world’s best. If I can’t get into the best one, then I’ll settle for the second best: New Mexico Tech.

I’ll definitely try again for graduate school though.

Do you have a lot of money and researched for the cure of cancer at age 6? Aww really? MIT wont like you then. From what I have heard and remember MIT is extremely selective, if not the most selective in the world. You will get in somewhere. What I have learned is college is more about personal development than academics, though a nice school certianly can help both.

Eh, while it’d be kinda cool, I really wouldn’t want to go to a place like MIT as a freshman in college. Much like Maelos said, college is more about personal development than prestiege. Find a good JC somewhere and try the waters; many JCs are pretty good, and save you a large amount of cash in the process. They also have the added benefit of making it easier to transfer into a place like MIT.

Focus more on going to a place that’s easy for you to get to and attend, then focus on what you want to do. From my expieriences, people do a lot of personal development in college, so doing that for the first two years in JC can be a big boon.

Last but not least.. it’s college. Meaning people. In JC, if you do well and stay on top of things, you get plenty of time to get to meet new people. Think about it. ;)

Damn dude. At least you don’t aim for a low community college like me. Fuck, I aim so low I get paid to go to go to college. :P

Hey man, I just stumbled upon this blog. I applied and got rejected to MIT as well for some little things like I don’t have a high school GPA (my school does not offer GPA, I did graduate high school). I too will be going to NMT in Fall ‘07. Hope to see you there!
