Uh Oh, 2.1-Unfriendly

Geeky Things

With the glorious coming of v2.1 of WordPress, I am stuck with a dilemma. As you may know, WP 2.1 comes with a lot of nice features, and some changes in the way themes and tags work. And as you know, I started work on my theme with 2.0 in mind (in other words, not coded with respect to 2.1’s slightly-different theme system). Do you know what this means?

I am delayed. :(

This means I’ll have to spend some extra days re-doing the theme to make it 2.1-friendly so it doesn’t look as whack as it does right now on my test server. Shouldn’t take long… hopefully.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get good timing as well, as Caleb is currently working with a hardware problem that fubarred the database and links. By the time he’s done getting a backup and restoring the broken, I’ll should be able to get the theme done.

It’s kind of funny we have to wait this long just for a friggin’ theme, and therefore the lot of us expect something spectacular. Let me tell right now: Don’t. :P

It’s not necessary that you have to upgrade to 2.1 just because you can, you could still use 2.0 for the new theme and then when you feel it is time for another theme design that one with 2.1 in mind. A blog is only as good as it’s content, a good theme and features might just help catch the eyes of new readers… that’s all.

2.1 has some features that may prove useful for me. Plus I always like keeping with the latest stuff… you know, security updates and stuff. I’m willing to rework the theme a bit to get the latest version.

Is it all that much different? I might have to work around my new one I’m working out also once I upgrade.
